Gabreta Smart Grids

Connecting
Europe Facility

The project Gabreta Smart Grids has the privilege of being implemented with financial support from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). From the total estimated project value of 200 673 526.00 EUR, European Commission has committed through CEF to support the project with 100 336 781.00 EUR from 2024 to 2028.

The main goal of the 10.11-CZDE-W-M-23-Gabreta Action is to accelerate the digitisation of the distribution grids of Bayernwerk Netz and EG.D to prepare the grids for the future of smart digital electricity distribution. By modernizing and digitizing the distribution grid, we will increase its capacity and enable a better connection of decentralised renewable resources. With the implementation of new IT solutions, we will be able to gather more comprehensive data, helping in observing, steering, and planning better our distribution grids.

With Gabreta, our focus is on the cross-border smartification of our distribution grids. We will also physically connect our grids for the first time. We are building three standby interconnections that are not powered, but which we canactivate in the event of supply bottlenecks. This provides more flexibility forfuture grid operations, enhancing overall energy security on both sides, while fostering greater cooperation between the two partners.

The local energy mix app - developed within this project - is designed to help different users to plan their energy consumption intelligently and thus positively influence their behaviour patterns. This app will create more transparency and awareness of the regional availability of sustainable energy.

WP2 – Integration and strengthening of distribution grids

WP2 is focussed on achieving two crucial objectives: the construction of three newcross-border interconnections at the Medium Voltage level (Germany 20 kV/ Czech Republic 22 kV) to facilitate international grid integration and the strengthening of the grid through the construction of 4 new primary substations, two for each distribution area.

The selection of the locations is focused on the border region and their amount for both promoters was driven by a strategic approach aimed at optimising grid capacity, enhancing quality parameters, and ensuring robust connection options.

WP3 – Modernisation of Distribution Grid by Smart Elements

WP3 is focussed on the modernisation and smartification of the distribution grid, promoting efficient grid management, increased renewable energy integration, and improved energy supply quality. Approx. 1 324 digital secondary substations, approx. 8 000 monitoring devices, approx. 270 remote controlled switchers, 10 remote controlled system protections in primary substations and approx. 1 024 voltage regulated distribution transformers will be deployed.

WP4 – Distribution Grid Communication

WP4 is focussed to establish a robust and efficient communication infrastructure for Smart Grid and remotely controlled elements, focussing on the development of optical fibre networks and power line communication systems. Approx. 322 km of backbone sections will be deployed together with approx. 2 400 PLC installation points.

WP5 – Smart Grid ICT Solutions

WP5 is focussed on the deployment of cutting-edge ICT solutions to enhance the Smart Grid infrastructure and optimise grid management, steering and grid control processes, data interconnection and sharing applications/tools for energy mix prediction and grid optimization. Through comprehensive data collection, sharing, and the integration of Smart Grid-related information, the Action fully complies with European energy integration targets. The implementation of Smart Grid technologies will usher in a new era of energy efficiency, sustainability, and automation, further advancing the EU’s energy goals.
